Passkeys and recovery

Confirm with a passkey or an authenticator app.

These are the ways a payment is confirmed on your account. Add more than one, and losing a device does not lock you out.

  • Each one shows when it was last used.
  • Removing one asks you to confirm.
  • The last one cannot be removed.
  • A way back in if you lose them all.
The Security settings: a passkey marked ready, with when it was last used and a Remove button, then buttons to add a passkey or an authenticator app, and I have lost access to all of these
The Add an authenticator app sheet: a QR code to scan, the same key to type in by hand, six boxes for the code the app shows, and the Confirm button

Add an authenticator app

  1. Scan the QR code

In Settings, under Security, choose “Add an authenticator app”. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, or type the code in by hand if you cannot scan it.

  2. Enter the code it shows

Your authenticator app now shows a six-digit code. Type it in to prove the two are linked. Until you do, the entry reads “Not finished” and confirms nothing.

  3. It joins the list

Once the code is accepted, the entry reads “Ready” and sits with your other ways to confirm. It says “Never used” until the first payment you confirm with it.

If you lose them all

Lost access to all of them? Start with an identity check.

On the Security screen, “I have lost access to all of these” starts a reset. You pass an identity check first, then enrol a replacement. Attempts are limited, so the app never starts one on your behalf, and a reset that runs out of time simply asks you to start another.

Nothing to remember, and always a way to confirm

  • No password to remember

0pay opens the app for you and signs you in. There is no password to enter and nothing to remember, so there is none to forget or reset.

  • Why the last one stays

The app will not remove your last passkey or authenticator app: the screen says it is the only way left to confirm a payment. To change it, add the new one first, then remove the old.

  • What a passkey is

A passkey is a key kept on your device in place of a password. When a payment asks for it, your device asks you to unlock it the way you usually do, and there is no code to type.

  • Keep a second one

Add a passkey on one device and an authenticator app on another, and losing either of them does not stop you confirming payments.

The sign-in note: 0pay signs you in and sends you here, with no password to enter and nothing to remember

Questions about passkeys and codes

What is a passkey?

A key that lives on your device instead of a password. When a payment needs confirming, your device asks you to unlock it, with a fingerprint, your face or the screen lock, whatever you normally use, and the payment is confirmed. There is nothing to type and nothing to copy.

Which authenticator apps work?

An app that shows six-digit codes. You link it by scanning the QR code in Settings, or by typing the code in by hand, and from then on you confirm with the code it is showing at that moment.

Why can’t I remove my last one?

Because the app treats it as the only way left to confirm a payment, and the screen says so. Add another passkey or authenticator app first, and then the old one can go.

What if I lose access to all of them?

Choose “I have lost access to all of these” on the Security screen. The reset starts with an identity check; once the check passes, you enrol a replacement. If a reset runs out of time, start another.
